A firearm is only part of the equation. The accessories you choose can significantly affect how effective, comfortable, and practical that firearm is for its intended role. Just like selecting the firearm itself, choosing accessories should be driven by purpose and thoughtful evaluation—not impulse or trends.

At Granite Peak Armory, we encourage customers to think carefully about accessories and how they support safe, responsible use. Below are key considerations for both pistols and rifles.

Pistol: Function Over Flash

Holsters: The Foundation of Safe Carry

For pistols, the holster is often the most important accessory you’ll choose. A quality holster should do three things reliably: protect the trigger, retain the firearm securely, and allow consistent access when needed.

Holsters should be selected based on how and where the firearm will be carried. Comfort, stability, and durability all matter. A poorly chosen holster can make a good pistol difficult or unsafe to carry, while a well‑designed one enhances both safety and confidence.

Red‑Dot Sights: An Option Worth Considering

Red‑dot sights on pistols have become increasingly popular, especially among shooters focused on accuracy and faster target acquisition. For some users, they can offer advantages—particularly in low‑light conditions or for those with aging eyes.

However, a red‑dot is not automatically better for everyone. It requires practice, proper mounting, and realistic expectations. Shooters should consider whether they are willing to commit to training with the system before deciding if a pistol‑mounted optic makes sense for them.

Weapon Lights: Practical Illumination

A weapon‑mounted light can be a valuable addition to a pistol used for defensive purposes. Positive target identification is critical, and a quality light allows the shooter to clearly identify what they’re aiming at in low‑light environments.

As with any accessory, compatibility and quality matter. A weapon light should be reliable, securely mounted, and appropriate for the intended role—not excessively bulky or underpowered.

Rifle Accessories: Building From the Optic Out

Optics: The Starting Point

For most rifles, the optic is the most important accessory decision. Whether choosing a scope or a red dot, the optic should align with the rifle’s purpose.

  • Red dots are often favored for close to mid‑range applications where speed and simplicity are priorities.
  • Scopes are typically better suited for precision or longer‑distance shooting, where magnification and fine aiming points matter.

A quality optic doesn’t need to be the most expensive option available—it needs to be clear, durable, and appropriate for how the rifle will be used.

Muzzle Devices: Managing Recoil and Control

Muzzle devices, such as brakes or compensators, can help reduce felt recoil and improve control during rapid or repeated firing. For some shooters, especially those using magnum cartridges, this can improve comfort and shooting consistency.

That said, muzzle devices introduce trade‑offs, including increased noise and blast. These factors should be considered carefully, particularly if the rifle will be used around others or in confined environments. Even when hunting, I would highly recommend ear protection when shooting with a muzzle brake – most brakes will significantly increase the decibel level for the shooter.

Balance and Practicality

As accessories add up, it’s important to keep the overall balance and weight of the rifle in mind. Adding multiple components can quickly turn a lightweight, manageable firearm into something cumbersome.

Each accessory should serve a clear purpose. If it doesn’t contribute meaningfully to how the firearm is used, reconsider it.

Making Thoughtful Accessory Choices

Accessories should enhance a firearm, not complicate it. The best setups are often the simplest—built around reliability, usability, and consistent performance rather than excess.

At Granite Peak Armory, we believe the right accessories are the ones that support responsible ownership and realistic use. Taking the time to make informed decisions helps ensure that your firearm works with you, not against you.

If you’re unsure which accessories make sense for your firearm or intended purpose, we’re always happy to discuss options and help you make a choice you’ll be confident in.
